The dossier Words are stones was presented today in Rome. Analysis of the hate speech in the public speech in six European countries edited by Lunaria, in collaboration with 5 European associations of Austria, Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy and Spain.
The dossier summarizes the contents of the six national reports edited within the Words are Stones project by Adice (F), Antigone-Centro di informazione e documentazione su racismo (GR), KISA (CY), Grenzenlos (A), Lunaria (IT), SOS Racisme (S).
Definitions (what do we really mean by “hate speech”?), data (few official ones available), topics, target groups and protagonists of violent rhetoric in the six countries are analyzed in the dossier and have more similarities than differences.
Security/insecurity/illegality; Invasion (referring to migrants); Cultural/religious incompatibility; Economic and social costs of migration; Competition between national and non-national/minorities in welfare and labour market; Danger of spreading Islamic terrorism: these are the six key themes that bounce from one country to another in an obsessive and pervasive way, breaking especially the part of public opinion most affected by inequalities and social injustice.
Faced with this real storm of wickedness, many initiatives, actions of protection and campaigns promoted by civil society are moving and acting.
On January 2020 an online awareness campaign conveyed by 5 short animation videos will tell racism in 5 ordinary situations: in front of a game on TV, in a bar, in front of a sandwich, in a doctor’s office and at a party. Key message: words are stones, you can be better than this.
