Casal Bruciato: the besieged house

On May 6, 2019, in Via Satta, in Rome, in the neighborhood of Casal Bruciato, some residents take to the streets to protest against the allocation of housing to a Roma family from the La Barbuta’s camp: a Bosnian man, his wife and his 12 children, all born in Italy. The following day, the family take part in a meeting in the Campidoglio, at the end of which they decided to stay in their assigned home, despite the protests. When some members of the family return to the house, it is all a chaos of shouting and shoving; even an unrepeatable “I rape you”, addressed to the Bosnian mother with a baby girl in her arms, pronounced by an activist from CasaPound. The neighbourhood is divided in two parts: on the one hand, the CasaPound gazebo, installed inside the courtyard of the building where the Roma family lives; on the other hand, the Asia Usb movement, which, together with other organizations, shows solidarity with the Roma. Two police cordons in riot gear separate them.  After the demonstration on 8th May, some associations decided to present a complaint to the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Rome against CasaPound, assuming the crime of threat and propaganda, incitement to commit crimes for reasons of “racial” discrimination up to the apologia of Fascism. Casal Bruciato, like Torre Maura, exemplify very well how a fact, that should be ordinary, can cause a vortex of xenophobia and racism. Download the card here.
